Southampton Solent University's Department of Science and Engineering has received high praise from its final year students in the 2025 National Student Survey (NSS).

Every year, NSS gives more than a quarter of a million students in their final year of university the opportunity to share their views on the experiences they have had in higher education. This year, a record number of students at Solent took part, and it showcases success for the University's Department of Science and Engineering.

A major result for BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science at Solent is the 100% satisfaction scores it received in the areas of academic support and teaching, making it the very best in the country out of 87 institutions. It was also ranked first in learning opportunities and student voice - the latter of which indicates Solent's commitment to responding to the views of its students.

This news follows the opening of a new laboratory for biomedical science students in February 2025, which was developed with £1m of funding from the Office for Students. The lab has added to an extensive range of existing facilities, giving students access to the very latest equipment in the field.

BSc (Hons) Software Engineering was ranked in the top five - and top 25% nationally - for academic support out of 67 institutions, while BEng (Hons) Renewable Energy Engineering was ranked first out of 34 universities in the UK in this measure.

Solent's Head of Science and Engineering, Sarah Radif, says:

"We are delighted with this year's NSS results, which continue to build on those from 2024. At Solent, we empower students to embrace their innovative ideas in areas of high societal importance such as renewable energy engineering and biomedical science, giving learners on these courses access to a unique range of facilities which complements teaching from inspiring leaders in the field. These results are also a testament to the dedication of our academic teams, whose commitment to nurturing students throughout their studies is making a real difference. This combination is having a powerful impact, highlighted by the voices of our students."
