Southampton Solent University is delighted to recognise Dr John Flackett – an expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI) - as an honorary Doctor of Science.
Awarded on Thursday 10 July, as part of Solent's 2025 graduation ceremonies, this honorary doctorate celebrates the 30 years John has spent as an innovator and leader in AI.
As Co-founder and Head of AiLab (Artificial Intelligence Laboratory), John has delivered training, research and consultation activities on a global scale, helping organisations become AI-ready, reaching from the UK all the way to Australia.
John says, "It's an incredible honour and a wonderful surprise to be awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Southampton Solent University. AI has been my passion for over 30 years and it's very humbling for my lifelong career in AI and education to be recognised in this way."
Achieving his PhD in artificial intelligence in 2005, John has an inimitable passion for AI, particularly in the education space, and spent a decade at Solent University teaching both undergraduate and master's students in artificial intelligence and software engineering. He was the first person to be awarded 1st class honours on the University’s BSc Computer Studies course in 1996. John was also honoured to be the AI Specialist in Residence for Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand and previously developed software for major corporations.
A trusted authority on AI and an acclaimed speaker, John has regularly appeared in the media and contributed to publications on the subject. With an international reputation, John is truly at the forefront of artificial intelligence in today’s world.
